Nano Banana Model Guide for fal.ai

A practical overview of the Nano Banana model families, when to use generate or edit, and how their capabilities differ.

Nano Banana is not one model in the product experience. It is a small family of fal.ai endpoints with different tradeoffs for generation, editing, price, and advanced controls.

The easiest way to reason about it is to separate two questions: are you creating a new image from text, or changing an existing image?

The model families

The checked-in fal.ai notes describe three families:

  • fal-ai/nano-banana
  • fal-ai/nano-banana-2
  • fal-ai/nano-banana-pro

Each family has a generate endpoint and an edit endpoint. Generate endpoints are text-first in the current docs. Edit endpoints require image_urls, so the UI should treat reference images as mandatory when the user chooses editing.

Generate vs edit

Use generate when the prompt is the source of truth. This is the right mode for new concepts, product shots, fashion portraits, campaign visuals, and quick visual exploration.

Use edit when an existing image matters. Editing is the better fit for replacing backgrounds, restyling rooms, upgrading product shots, or keeping the composition of a source image while changing the mood.

The input contract is the key difference:

{
  "prompt": "A cinematic product photo on a clean studio backdrop"
}
{
  "prompt": "Replace the background with a warm sunset",
  "image_urls": ["https://example.com/input.png"]
}

Choosing a default

The original Nano Banana family is the lowest-cost path at $0.039 / image. It is a strong fit for a simple text-to-image MVP flow and budget-conscious editing, but the current docs do not expose resolution, web search, or thinking-level controls for it.

Nano Banana 2 is the best general default. It documents 0.5K, 1K, 2K, and 4K resolution options, supports web search, and exposes thinking_level with minimal and high.

Nano Banana Pro is the premium choice at $0.15 / image. It supports higher-quality generation and editing workflows, documents 1K, 2K, and 4K resolutions, and supports web search. The current docs do not document thinking-level controls for Pro.

Product implications

A good Nano Banana UI should make model capabilities visible without making the user memorize endpoint names.

For the basic model, keep the interface focused: prompt, aspect ratio, output format, seed, and image count are enough for most users.

For Nano Banana 2, expose advanced controls because the docs support them. Resolution, web search, and thinking level are meaningful decisions here.

For Nano Banana Pro, present it as the polished output path. It is more expensive, so the product copy should explain why a user would choose it: premium image quality, marketing assets, typography-heavy visuals, and high-stakes edits.

The short version

If the user wants the cheapest path, start with Nano Banana. If they want the safest default with rich controls, use Nano Banana 2. If they want the best-looking output and are comfortable spending more credits, use Nano Banana Pro.
